'Charles de Mills'

Gallica, 1790, breeder unknown

'Charles de Mills,' a.k.a. Bizarre Triomphant, is a rose I've been looking forward to getting for some time, for his color and his reputed fragrance.

The first flower, seen at right, appeared on 12 May 2007 at the end of the long cane in the photo below. The camera does not do it justice; the flower is the most lovely blend of true crimson fading to magenta; I will have to go cut it and paint it later on.

'Charles de Mills' also has a very fine fragrance, even in this very young rose.

I was hoping 'Charles de Mills' would make really exceptional growth last summer, but he was impeded somewhat by the over-enthusiasm of a tomato plant I saved from being thrown in a compost pile. Nevertheless there are some good canes and I'm hoping for great things.
