A Walk Through The Garden, 2008

'Crested Sweetheart'

Centifolia Moss, 1988, R. Moore

'Crested Sweetheart' was a new addition in 2006. She didn't bloom that year, just put down roots and began to climb up her trellis. I got her for her genes; I'd like to see if I can get the damask-like moss to grow on her very unusual calyx.

The sepals, as you can see, are quite lovely and fancy. The whole plant is actually quite a lovely thing in itself, bearing many leaves in a variety of colors which change subtly every day. But it does have one major drawback, and it's a biggie: it is the most mildew -prone rose in my garden. While I do rather like her moss, I may not keep this rose if I can't find a better way to control the mildew; nothing I've sprayed this plant with, commercial or home-made, has so far helped.
