'Dragon's Blood'

Modern Shrub, 2007, P. Barden

This is a new introduction from Paul Barden. Saw the picture and fell in love, and can't wait to see it in person! Did I say I'm not a fan of brown? Well, I'm not a fan of what are curiously known as the warm browns, but if she really is this color... wow, thought I.

Last year, in my garden, Dragon's Blood grew only a little. She produced a few small flowers that were far more pink than anything else. Well, not to worry; alas this is fairly typical of a brand new plant trying to adjust not only to our soil but the high-altitude sun. Better next year, surely.

In 2008 she began growing on well, and then developed a very odd pattern of choloris (we have extremely alkaline soils here. Coupled with a very variable and often ridiculously high water table, many plants show chlorosis problems in spring here, most notably the rugosas). I managed to her her through that, though (I think) and the first bud is opening now. As far as color is concerned, this year she does not intend to disappoint!
