'Freckles'Modern Shrub, 1976, G. Buck
The only other rose I know of that is consistently spotted with dark spots on a light ground is Rosa arkansana. I'm sure there must be more, but I wanted to see these two side by side. (There are several roses that become spotted through rain or insect damage; I'm looking for roses which show spotting without such interference.)
I don't have a picture of 'Freckles' in her full glory yet. I got her specifically to cross her with other roses in my quest to breed more spotted roses. I took the pollen from this bud and made a reciprocal cross with "Fa's Marbled Moss," and used the remaining pollen to cross her with Rosa arkansana, which shows quite variable spotting in my garden.
Freckles seems to have suffered a lot of dieback over the winter, but hopefully all is not lost.
