A Walk Through The Garden, 2007

previous rose ------- next rose

"Ichiko" 2007-1

Type to be determined, but half English

One thing I have to give 'Golden Celebration' a lot of credit for is that she sets hips with glee. After all my deliberate crosses failed in 2007 I went around the garden pulling off what hips I could and hoping for the best. Not much happened, except that in mid-December, this one seedling of 'Golden Celebration' appeared. She sulked the winter away as I carefully tended her and kept her in sunny windows away from cats. Then the greenhouse got put up.... and this happened:

Talk about being chuffed! You can't see it in photographs, but this little jewel sparkles! And it sparkles in a clear, true red without the slightest hint of orange or purple! Not only that, but it has a fragrance, too, like a fine soap.

This magnificent red was certainly not what I was expecting by any means. 'Golden Celebration's' parents are both pale pinks. Who might the father be? Anyone in the garden, but I suspect it must have been one of the repeat blooming roses since repeat-blooming is recessive. The one she looks most like is 'Ruby Meillandecor,' but...

Anyway, the photo at right is of her very first flower, which may or may not be indicative of what's to come. But I certainly hope she keeps this excellent color and wonderful fragrance.

We'll see!
