'Ma Ponctuée'

Moss Perpetual, 1857, J.P. Guillot

This is one of only two other spotted moss roses I know, apart from "Fa's Marbled Moss" and (hopefully) her offspring. For a while it was thought that FMM and "Ponc" were the same, but they are two very different roses.

For one thing, while FMM blooms once in early summer, Ponc blooms the year long. The latter has much more in common with Marbrée than with FMM in terms of general pattern of growth and the presence of a "shoulder" of leaves under each flower. In my experience, at least so far (and Ponc was only a yearling last year), Ponc is far less reliably spotted than either FMM or Marbrée; in fact, I saw no spots at all—and precious little color—on any of the flowers I got last year.

I have to admit, lovely as the flower is, I have never seen a single spot on any of the flowers 'Ma Ponctuée' has produced for me. As a garden plant, she is short, extremely stocky, and one of the very last roses to break every spring.
