A purple sport of a pure white rose? I had to see this! That fact that it was, at the garden center, advertised as "growing on its own roots" was an even bigger plus -- nothing "modern" grows for long in my garden unless I manage to get it onto its own roots.
Well, there's no scent that I can detect; but this is one fabulous rose in all other respects. It weathers the winters without fuss, bugs leave it alone, it blooms throughout the summer and the color.........
No photograph can show you how glorious this color is. What appear to be grey areas on the petals here are actually lenticular cells that act as a prism for the color-bearing cells underneath. The color is actually a dazzling, smoking burgundy with a light mottling. Curiously, the stamens and anthers of this flower are also burgundy, something I'd only seen before in Basye's Purple.
I have no idea whether she will pass on this color, but wouldn't it be wonderful!
